Considering that one of the roles of Freemasonry is philanthropy, the Supreme Council of the RSAA, at the initiative of the Sovereign Grand Commander, Il. & P.P. Fr. Stelian Nistor 33 °, decided to finance the renovation of a surgery room within the Elias University Emergency Hospital.
University clinical hospital, located in Bucharest, on Mărăşti Blvd., no. 17, provides specialized medical care, preventive, curative, emergency, recovery, care in case of pregnancy and maternity, as well as children and newborns, and carries out research and educational activities.
Elias Hospital was founded in 1936 by the Menachem H. Elias Family Foundation, as stated in his will by Jacques Menachem Elias, who left his entire fortune as testator to the Romanian Academy.
The construction of the hospital began in 1934 on a plot of land purchased by the Elias Foundation from the Romanian Red Cross Society and is due to the architect Radu Dudescu and the engineer Emil Prager. On November 15, 1938, in the presence of Grand Duke Michael of Alba Iulia (the future King Michael I) and Queen Helena, as well as other personalities from the country and abroad, the “Hospital founded by the Menachem H. Family was put into operation. Elias ”, the most modern hospital in Europe at that time, opening its doors to the outpatient clinic, the hospital (with 200 beds) and the sanatorium. The Board of Directors and Administration of the Menachem H. Elias Family Foundation had, at that time, as president Barbu Ştirbey, seconded by the vice-presidents Gr. Antipa and Em. Pantazi, appoints, with the approval of a special commission, the entire medical staff, headed by Acad. Danielopol, establishes the rules of administration and operation and draws up the first budget of revenues and expenditures of the hospital.
Until 1941, the hospital was run directly by the Elias Foundation. Between 1941 and 1944 the hospital was requisitioned by the General Staff of the Romanian Army and made available to the German Aeronautical Mission as a tenant. In 1944, Elias Hospital, erroneously considered a good German, was taken over by a Soviet medical unit. In 1948, the hospital was transferred to the network of the Ministry of Health.
In 1990, Elias Hospital became part of the Ministry of National Defense. In 1992, a protocol was signed between the Romanian Academy, the Elias Foundation and the Ministry of National Defense, through which the hospital passed into the temporary administration, free of charge, of the ministry.
Starting with the year 2002, he returned to the administration of the Romanian Academy, becoming in the same year an emergency university hospital.
