In normal times, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Romania used to hold its National Session at the end of December. It was always an opportunity to assert its status, but also to confirm, not only by the number and quality of guests arriving in Bucharest from the country and the world, the respect and brilliance enjoyed by Romanian Freemasonry abroad. The sanitary conditions of 2020 could only temporarily interrupt this tradition. But like many other activities, "Scottish" Freemasonry has moved to the Internet. The Romanians kept their quality of hosts, but they organized the meeting online, on Zoom.

What appeared to be a breakdown, however, proved to be a great success. 44 Supreme Councils from around the world took part. No less than 37 countries were represented at the highest level (by the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite in that country), to which are added seven more countries which, according to diplomatic custom, have sent letters of success, unable to participate due to objective reasons. Many delegations were composed of three or even five representatives of the respective Supreme Council. Without exception, the foreigners were impressed by the initiative, organization and quality of the event. Beyond the emotional and empathic speeches, the Scottish Rite in Romania naturally received assurances of fraternal recognition and support in internal conflict from all the Supreme Councils in the world, from Washington, Moscow, London, Berlin, Tel Aviv or Paris, Rome. , Istanbul and up to Johannesburg, Brasilia and others. Precisely to prevent Romania's participation, which he perceives distorted as a crime of lezmajestate against him and a personal insult, Radu Bălănescu - who had already lost the 2018 elections for the position of secretary of the Grand Lodge Conference - chose to act according the motto "according to me, the flood". He blindly threw himself into a long line of unconstitutional abuses, which not only brought him dismissal and exclusion, but also put Romania on the brink of diplomatic and moral quarantine in the world organization. All in the most "mioritic" way possible: not understanding that it is not about people, but about the international prestige of Romania, the "shepherd" Bălănescu could not stand that "kiss" Nistor should be offered such an honor, so, " at sunset… ”

Trying to transform Romanian Freemasonry from a fraternity into a "divine right" oligarchy, Bălănescu not only divided an organization rebuilt through three decades of collective efforts, but unfortunately brought it to the brink of losing international recognition. I am very worried about the numerous communications received in the last week from and about the Supreme Council of Romania. It breaks my heart to see how so many good people and Masons of the Scottish Rite in Romania face such ridiculous trials as those imposed on you and your members by a Grand Master with suspicious motives. I hope my letter to this Grand Master has helped a little.

The US Masonic Jurisdiction North does not accept the actions of the Grand Master of the Grand National Lodge of Romania, set out in the Grand Master's letter of April 21, 2020. In this letter, the Grand Master claims that he no longer recognizes the Supreme Council with you as Sovereign Grand Commander a "new" Supreme Council with Răzvan Buzatu as Sovereign Grand Commander. The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States does not recognize and will not recognize this new Supreme Council, because its formation is irregular and does not meet the guiding criteria for fraternal recognition of our jurisdiction.

The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Romania has never stopped!

Under adverse conditions it adapted and continued to work since its inception in 1881.

We won't stop now.

The Scottish Rite adapted its way of working during the First World War. And he survived.

In the new state organization enshrined in the Constitution of Greater Romania in 1923, the Scottish Rite worked and developed in a normal democratic climate.

He adapted his way of working during the royal dictatorship of Charles II.

And he survived.

He survived our fascist persecution. 

He survived World War II.

He also survived the communist persecution. He adapted his way of working in exile during his ban by the communist regime. And he worked (for example, the Sovereign Grand Commander of the RSAA Supreme Council of Poland, Marek Brzezinski 33, is very proud that his 4th Grade Certificate, Initiation into the Scottish Rite, is signed by SMC Marcel Shapira Romania of Paris, in 1985).

After the fall of the communist regime, the Scottish Rite returned home, worked and developed.

State of emergency

During this time, the Scottish Rite is being tried again, but the Coronavirus is not just about us. It is a universal challenge, but one that is being addressed nationally. 

It is our turn today to defend the existence of the Scottish Rite in Romania. We inherit it through the intelligence, military-knightly discipline, devotion and sacrifices of our forerunners. This is the only way we will write each page in the history of the Rite. Only in this way do we qualify ourselves to become over the years the proudly mentioned forerunners of those who will carry on the Rite.

The Romanian RSAA, as an organization of responsible citizens, will adapt its way of working to the new conditions. We unconditionally submit to the decisions of the law enforcement authorities and understand how bad our physical encounters could be during the pandemic.

It was hard for us to miss Odeon. It is difficult for us to stay "social" away from each other, but the health we all want for our families is part of the light of the Rite.

Until the national health protection conditions allow it, the activity of the RSAA in Romania will move "into exile" on the Internet. And he will survive.

The precedent set in the field of inter-Masonic relations by our mode of communication so far, as well as the activity of the "Internet Lodge" within UGLE (Grand Lodge of England) are already validated realities.
